Matching Mom Genes

As Matching Mom Genes enters its 2nd season, the sisters find themselves ever closer emotionally, despite all new geographical distance. Shelby is living full-time in Germany! With one sister navigating all new *European* parenting cultures and experiences, MMG is stretching their conversations worldwide and loving every second of it. We might be in different time zones and on different continents, but motherhood still has some matching kicks to hand out. Grab your best pair of jeans and join the conversation wherever you like to listen! Matching Mom Genes is just another mommy talk pod, but we’re still cool so stick with us. Nicole is a parenting educator and coach, mom of 3 and overall insane person who owns actual farm animals. Her twin sister Shelby is a fairly straight laced badass engineer and mom of 1 living deep in the burbs. Together they bring unique perspectives to stack on their shared childhood experiences and identical genetic codes. Welcome to clashing worldviews jenga, people, hold on to your mommy jeans.

Mother’s Day (Ep 13)

Thursday May 18, 2023

Thursday May 18, 2023

Nicole is joined by our mother to take an obnoxious amount of buzzfeed quizzes about motherhood and then play Would You Rather? bizarre parenting scenario edition. It's a fun light episode that lets us all sit back and enjoy the silliness that is motherhood.

Birthday Parties Suck (Ep 12)

Thursday May 11, 2023

Thursday May 11, 2023

Nicole’s son is turning 2! And she HATES planning birthday parties! Can Shelby help change her perspective? Our plan for a joint birthday party has been dashed so let’s talk about backup plans and how to manage celebrations on top of all the other things swimming around inside a parent’s head. It’s a simple, fun conversation and Nicole was taking NOTES on these hot tips.

Privacy vs Dignity (Episode 11)

Thursday May 04, 2023

Thursday May 04, 2023

Nicole spends this week quizzing Shelby about how parents can better handle their children's identities on the internet. Do you show their faces? Do you tell silly, but maybe embarrassing anecdotes? Can children consent to content created about them? And, in this revolution around honesty in motherhood and our generation's desire to be authentic, what's the line between the PARENT'S experience and the CHILD'S rights?

Consent At All Ages (Ep 10)

Thursday Apr 27, 2023

Thursday Apr 27, 2023

Today’s topic is slightly heavier. April is the awareness month for both sexual assault and child abuse/child sexual abuse. One of the most important things we can do as parents is try to change the narrative around consent and bodily autonomy for this next generation. Consent can be taught at any age and this week we aim to address some of those concepts and break down manageable steps you can take today to start introducing this topic. (Also, a huge thank you to Laurie for coming back to help with this episode! We love an April birthday reunion party!)

Shelby is back from her Italian adventure and ready to spill the details on traveling to another continent with a toddler. She gives us her tally on in-flight diaper changes, explains what anchovy quiche is and why everyone in Italy loved her baby's jeans. Very on brand for us, I think.

This week, Laurie returns and talks with Nicole about therapizing humans during the great pandemonium and they talk through what it’s like to have backgrounds in mental health while parenting. TLDR: Big feelings happen to everyone and the emotions of parents are just as messy as the emotions of kids. Plus, Nicole compares all of your cute babies to aliens, so that’s just nice.

The System (Episode 6)

Thursday Mar 30, 2023

Thursday Mar 30, 2023

This week we have our first guest! Please welcome Laurie, a truly beautiful soul who has worked in many aspects of the social work field, first with her Bachelors of Social Work and then with as Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She has also worked as a teacher in an international school, but sadly had to rejoin America where we can talk all day about how the system sucks. Laurie is a longtime friend- we’ve known her 10 years now?!?!- and talks this week with Nicole about their individual experiences working within the social work and family service fields. Shelby is out galavanting the world, but we hope you will enjoy this deeper dive into why people are so passionate about this work and how working in different parts of the over all family-legal system compare to one another.
